Bing Expands Twitter, Facebook Integration

Posted on: March 29th, 2011 by Lina

Bing has released a couple new social search feature, utilizing Twitter and Facebook in new ways.

First off, Bing has started adding tweets into Bing News. “Awhile back we introduced Bing social which lets you plunge into the real-time tweet stream to uncover the latest updates on the Web,” Bing says. “This week we took it a step further by integrating some of this real time social data into Bing news.”

You can see a realtime feed of tweets in the right hand column for additional news or updates related to whatever keywords you’re searching for. Want the latest on Groupon? You can get the traditional news articles and blog posts along with Groupon-related tweets as they roll in.

“As we’ve seen with the tragedy in Japan or political turmoil in the Middle East, real people are relaying timely and compelling items not captured by traditional outlets,” says Bing. ”Bing news now lets you compare and assess authoritative news analysis alongside real-time citizen journalists so you can decide which content sources you want to use.”

More Hints at Google’s Social Strategy

Posted on: March 28th, 2011 by Lina

Even before all of this Google “social layer” talk started, we talked about how Google already had many of the components of a powerful social network – just spread out across different products. Basically, there just hasn’t been an effective way of bringing it all together for users.

Putting The Pieces Together

It looks like Google is trying to correct that, as various hints have been revealed over the last few months – the navigation bar, the updated profile, and the Google accounts for YouTube users are a few that come quickly to mind.

It appears that Google is more adamantly promoting (or inserting, rather) the Google Profile in more of its services.

MG Siegler points to a note left on the Google Groups message board, saying, “Google Groups-specific profiles will no longer be supported. Instead, you will be able to use the new Google Groups to (optionally) link your new and improved Google profile with your groups. Starting July 1st 2011, you will not be able to make changes to your Groups profile. Your profile information will be available for export from your profile page until November 1st 2011. This change will not affect the nicknames you might have chosen for yourself to participate in groups. It will only affect the custom profile fields, such as your photo, location, and occupation.

Google Accounts for All YouTube Users

Posted on: March 25th, 2011 by Lina

In May of 2009, Google started giving people signing up for YouTube accounts, Google accounts too. A little over a year later, the company announced that it would start requiring all YouTube users to have Google accounts.

This occurred during a time when the tech world was really waiting for Google to unveil a new social offering to help the company compete with Facebook for users’ social graph and online identity. Back then, this was still being referred to throughout the Blogosphere as “Google Me,” which would later come to be known as other things like “Google+1,” “Emerald City,” or the one I prefer – a “social layer,” which is how Google has described it, and makes it seem like more of an integration of existing products, rather than a whole new product, which I think is more what we’re looking at (even if new products do come into play).

The bottom line is that YouTube is Google’s most used social media product, and that tying it to the Google account is smart in terms of getting people on the web to be a part of Google’s “social layer” and use Google for their “identity”. It’s not making people turn away from Facebook, but it helps give Google a good slice of that.

Tips in Dealing with Stolen Content

Posted on: March 24th, 2011 by Lina

According to source – One of the wonderful things about the web is that most of the world’s information is accessible online. Better still, a large portion of the world has access to all of that information. Search engines play a huge role in making it easy to sift through that information and find the stuff you are looking for. Problems arise, however, when people who are less scrupulous decide to publish content and decide that the best way to do that is to steal it. Unfortunately, the web makes stealing of your content quite easy, and enforcement of your rights somewhat difficult.

New Ranking Signals: Google Preview

Posted on: March 22nd, 2011 by Lina

Google does an awesome job in creating new signals for itself. Two recent ones have caught my attention:

1. Google Preview: You can see what this looks like here:

Digital Cameras

Once you enter a search result in, if you click on the magnifying glass you see a preview of the web page before you click through on it and decide to visit it. What is interesting about this is that users will need to move their cursor to the magnifying glass and click on it to see the preview. This is just as much work as it is to click through to the web page and look at it. I can’t imagine that more than a few percent of people will do this.

So why would Google do this? To get a signal. Imagine that 3% of search queries result in someone previewing before clicking through on it. Even the fact that they felt the need to preview it represents a signal. It tells Google that the previewer did not have an immediate sense of brand recognition and wanted to check it out from a distance first. The second signal is the percentage of people who preview a listing that end up clicking on it. The key to both these signals is how your page compares to your competition for these metrics.

From Google’s perspective, this is really valuable data.

How Panda Reshapes the Ranking Factors Picture

Posted on: March 22nd, 2011 by Lina

According to source – Much attention has been paid to the recent Google algorithm change that Danny Sullivan called the Farmer Update and that Google in a Wired article referred to as Panda. A lot of focus has been paid to the types of sites impacted, and the nature of the signals that Google has available to it to use. There are plenty of articles on both of these topics (one of the best ones is this one by Vanessa Fox. In fact, in the months leading up to this I predicted the downfall of Content Farms (which is still a work in progress), and much about this change. To me, this is only part of the story.
Farmer / Panda is a Fundamental Shift in Search Ranking

That’s a strong statement. But, think about it for a moment. We now have confirmation that Google is doing what it can to evaluate content quality. The major tools it has to do this are:

*Uniqueness of the content
*User Engagement with the content

Twitter Promotes New Site for 5th Birthday

As you probably know by now, Twitter is celebrating its 5th birthday. With the service now averaging about a billion tweets per week, one could say that growth is not a problem. But for those not yet bound in the cozy confines of 140 characters, Twitter today unveiled discover.twitter.com in a effort to get new users acquainted with the phenomenon.

In wishing Twitter a happy birthday, the Twitter staff came out in droves to tweet links to the new site. I counted 10 to 15 tweets similar to this in the span of an hour or so:

The site offers snapshots of 16 celebrities who are on Twitter and asks you to follow them. Speaker of the House John Boehner, Larry King replacement Piers Morgan and fashionista Rachel Zoe are among the featured few. The bottom of the page also displays links to browse popular interests like entertainment, politics and technology.

Front and center on the new page is a 3 minute video that asks some of the aforementioned celebrities questions about their interests on Twitter and who they follow. Hillary Clinton tells us it’s a great place for information while Snoop Dogg lets the world know he follows Martha Stewart. Check out the video below.
