Search Engine Marketing

Search engine marketing is a method of online advertising which increases your site’s ranking in search engine listings. It contributes greatly to draw in potential customers as a result of improved exposure on search results. In case your site is actually within the 2nd page of Google for a particular key word, most likely you aren’t acquiring that much targeted traffic as you can if you are in the 1st page of Search engines like Google.

Search engine results depend upon a number of various computations in order to be sure that search results show up on the top part. Content material and authority are in most cases the 2 major components that allows a web page obtain increased exposure on the result pages, however a wide range of factors move in to position effectively.

Your site’s ranking is usually affected by the subject material that shows up on website pages. A site that provides outstanding and high quality articles will certainly rank better on search results compared to some other sites. Websites that are loaded with useful content materials tend to be positioned on top by Search engines. It’s because a website that has a wide range of written articles usually ranks higher for a range of search terms which prospective customers might search for.

One more essential element for being ranked is the number of websites that link back to your site. If lots of other sites are backlinking to yours, this is an indication to Google that your own site is worth to visit. If you’re able to acquire a backlink right from a site that seems to have a really high authority, such as college or university website or government website, these backlinks tend to be a lot more valuable votes as compared to a regular site. If at all possible, your own website must get backlinks from a huge number of sources as well as a handful of links coming from authority websites.

If you’re unable to rank good organically, because of the very competitive key phrase you are striving to get ranking for, several search engine marketers suggest working with pay-per-click adverts. With a PPC program, you will pay to help your site placed at the 1st page of Google. You’ll only get charged when people visit your site throughout the search results. Even though there’s a price linked with PPC advertising, it’s still a worthy investment in case your site depends on having plenty of site visitors. The probability is you can easily recover any PPC cost with the extra sales earnings you generate from getting your website at the 1st pages of Search engines.

Search Engines and ClickStream Data

February 9th, 2011 Rhed Posted in Search Engine No Comments »

Recently there was a big kerfuffle over Bing copying Google results, Bing denying it, the Google FUD machine in full force, and some nice conspiracy theory about who is pulling the strings and why. While this makes for some exciting drama and fun twitter banter, there is some actionable information for SEO’s: paying attention to and using clickstream data.

According to the Bing response they are 100% using click stream data from sources such as IE toolbars and factoring that data into their ranking algorithms. In fact, that click stream data is at the heart of Google’s accusation that Bing is copying them. What REALLY happened is that Google engineers set up some fake SERP’s for made up words and made sure Bing got the data by sending clicks to Bing. While it’s technically not the clickfraud that Bing frames it as (since PPC wasn’t involved), it was artificial data, convincing enough that Bing believed 10% of it.

In my opinion the days of being able to ignore or dismiss social as a fad or not a part of SEO are over…
The real question you need to be asking yourself is, does Google use click stream data as part of their ranking algo? If you set the wayback machine to 2002, GoogleGuy (aka Matt Cutts) felt using Toolbar data could help provide better SERPs (hat tip MattMcGee). To the best of my Knowledge at the time this post was written, Google hasn’t disclosed if toolbar clickstream data is or is not used in ranking data (if Matt Cutts or any other rep wants to comment or drop me a link to an official comment, I’ll append this post). That said, in my testing I have seen a lot of evidence pointing to toolbar click stream data being used–at least on a short term basis. Pages with a lot of social proof (aka tweets, stumbles, reddits, etc) will pop into SERP’s for extremely competitive terms and then fade away when the clickstream data stops.

Search Engines or ‘Real-Time’ Search

November 16th, 2010 Rhed Posted in Search Engine No Comments »

When Danny Sullivan speaks, the search industry listens. The search pioneer gave an intriguing keynote speech at SMX West in which he compared the three major search engines to his kids. In this video, Danny explains how he has unconditional love for his children even when they disappoint him. The same idea is present with the search engines because he still loves and uses them even though they disappoint him also.

The main reason for this analogy was to discuss ways Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft could improve. Although Google statistics show that they hold between 60-70 percent of search share, the company still has areas it can expand on. A few of these areas include video search, image search, and map spam issues.

Live Search, Kumo, and Now Bing?

November 16th, 2010 Rhed Posted in Search Engine No Comments »

Just before SMX Advanced kicked off, Microsoft announced its new search engine Bing. So, you can only imagine what a hot topic it was at the show. People had many opinions consisting of good, bad, and indifferent reactions to the search engine.

As Danny Sullivan shared with us, it’s interesting that users are discovering features from Bing that in fact, Microsoft already had. Users simply didn’t know they existed on Live Search. Also, users seem to have forgotten that the other search engines have many of the exact same features as Bing, and some even more.

Blekko To Be the 3rd Search Engine?

November 16th, 2010 Rhed Posted in Search Engine No Comments »

After launching on November 1st, Blekko is still gaining a lot of attention. Last week at PubCon, WebProNews had the opportunity to sit down with Rich Skrenta, the CEO and Co-founder of the new search engine, to find out what all the hype is about.

As he explains, Blekko has a feature called slashtags that allows users to attach categories to search. These slashtags are designed to help keep spam out of Blekko, which is a common problem for search engines. In addition to the 200 slashtags that Blekko provides, users can create their own slashtags. Incidentally, users created more than 30,000 slashtags in the first week after the engine launched.
