How Much is a Tweet or a Like Worth to You?

February 19th, 2011 Rhed Posted in social networking No Comments »

ChompOn has released some interesting findings (pdf) related to social media sharing and its value to e-commerce. Specifically, the firm sought out to answer the question: “What is the value of a social action in online commerce?”

What they came up with is that a Facebook Share was worth $14, a Facebook “like” was worth $8, a tweet was worth $5, and a Twitter follow was worth $2.

“Admittedly, we believe the true value for likes and follows to be much higher due to creation of long-term loyalty,” says ChompOn. “Additionally, it is not possible to directly attribute traffic from these actions so it was necessary to estimate.

Obviously, you have to take into account their methodology, which is where that estimation factor comes in.

“For shares and tweets, we were able to directly attribute sales to the original action, so we simply took the total revenue attributed to each action and divided it by the total number of shares/tweets,” the firm says. “For likes and follows, we had to estimate attribution by looking at our traffic references and subtracting out purchases made through shares/tweets as well as purchases made through direct traffic.”

ChompOn is also careful to point out that gross revenue depends on the products and services being offered.

In reality, you may find a greater dollar value in all of these social interactions, or you may find now dollar value at all. There are a lot of potential variables to consider, but if nothing else, it shows that you can indeed place a dollar value on a tweet, on a “like”, etc.

That’s really the moral of the story. Many complaints have been voiced about a lack of measurable ROI when it comes to social media. If you have this complaint, it may be time to re-evaluate your measuring strategies.

Social networking in Government

December 17th, 2010 Rhed Posted in social networking No Comments »

Social networking services such as Twitter and Facebook have become important tools for the government to relay their policies to the public. But some users of the services say that so far, it has yet to go beyond one-way communication.

According to source, the Ministry of Strategy and Finance did a live broadcast of its 2011 economic policy briefing through Twitter on Tuesday. It was the first time a government ministry put a live broadcast on a social networking service. On the following day, Minister of Strategy and Finance Yoon Jeung-hyun invited seven Twitter users to a restaurant in central Seoul for lunch to talk about the economy. The seven participants were all under 30 and were selected at random through the Finance Ministry’s Twitter site.

Most government ministries operate one to three blogs and Twitter or me2Day accounts in the names of ministers or ministries. Recently, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Unification opened Facebook accounts.

However, there is criticism that communication through social networking services is still a one-way street. Twitter users complain that when they post messages on government sites, they do not get a response. One Twitter user wrote on his account that Twitter accounts run by the government are similar to the message boards on government Web sites.

Tips For Social Networking

December 3rd, 2010 Rhed Posted in social networking No Comments »

Social networking is the grouping of individuals into specific groups, like small rural communities or a neighborhood subdivision. Although social networking is possible in person, especially in the workplace, universities, and high schools, it is most popular online.

Difference about social Media and Social Networking. Social Media can be called a strategy and an outlet for broadcasting, while Social Networking is a tool and a utility for connecting with others.

Here are some few pointers for effective Social Networking:

* Think before you post, things you put on your sites can and will come back to haunt you. Any pictures you show or updates you write are public. Even if your account has privacy settings activated, your information is never completely secure.

* Make sure you have an online presence. Social networking sites are not just used by young professionals. You need to stay up-to-date.

* If you don’t want others knowing certain things about you, keep in mind that you control what information you post.

* Remember that your online presence is part of your professional image. The content on your social networking sites creates your online presence. Consider the image you want to portray.

* Do not let social networking take over your life. Stay productive. Some people become so involved in updating their virtual presence that they let their other responsibilities slide.

* Remember that phone calls and in-person visits are still an important part of doing business

* Do not post negative comments about your employer. If you do have a gripe with your employer, talk to the appropriate person in your company.
