Jimmy Wales Really Wants You to Start Editing Wikipedia Articles

As a part of Wikipedia’s objective to reverse the decrease in input from the site’s editors and truly increase the pool of editors to 200,000 within the next three years, the world’s most widely used encyclopedia has launched a brand new and simplified editor that the website hopes will encourage much more contributions from customers.

The aim of the brand new “visual editor” allows potential editors circumvent the work of learning the unique wiki markup language essential to edit pages on Wikipedia and instead get directly to the editing. Although Wikipedia’s special markup language isn’t terribly hard to grasp, at least compared to other technical languages, needing to learn any unfamiliar languages merely to help make small updates to a site can be heavily precautionary if not an interest-killer altogether. As Wikipedia has usually accepted inclusion instead of elitism, the newest visual editor grants virtually anybody with a computer, a keyboard, and certain internets to start editing articles.

The visual editor was built based on feedback from Wikipedians concerning how to enhance the editing process to help make it as user-friendly as possible. “We want the process of learning how to edit to be trivial, so our volunteers, both new and experienced, can devote themselves to what they edit,” Wikipedia stated in a blog post which announced the newest visual editor.

“To build this iteration of our open-source visual editor, we have been working with some of the team from Wikia, a collaborative publisher that operates the largest network of video game, entertainment and lifestyle wikis in the world. We both believe that this kind of tool should be built not just for the Wikimedia wiki projects, but for everyone using MediaWiki software, and when it’s done we look forward to including the visual editor “out of the box” for anyone setting up a wiki with our software.”
